¿Por qué nacen más niños que niñas en China?
Uno de los datos que con más frecuencia se ofrecen de China es el desequilibrio que existe entre el número de mujeres y el de hombres (la ratio está en 1,07 hombres por cada mujer).
Hasta ahora, este hecho (que también se produce en otros lugares de Asia, incluso de forma más aguda) se había explicado en función de la preferencia que sienten las familias chinas por los hijos varones. Esta preferencia llevaría a un número importante de padres o bien a optar por el aborto cuando conocieran que el sexo del hijo que esperan es el femenino o a dar a las hijas un trato peor, en atención y cuidados, al de los hijos, lo que explicaría una mayor tasa de mortalidad entre las mujeres.
Aun aceptando esta teoría (al fin y al cabo uno de sus principales valedores es el Premio Nobel de Economía Amartya Sen), siempre me sentí incómodo con ella. Por más que la discriminación por razón de sexo exista en todas partes, en las algunas sociedades asiáticas (y digo algunas porque en Japón y el Sudeste Asiático no se produce ese fenómeno) parecía adquirir unas dimensiones monstruosas.
Por eso leí con alivio la noticia aparecida en marginal revolution de que un estudio efectuado por una joven graduada en Harvard, Emily Oster, probaría que, por lo menos en China, el hecho de que el número de hombres sea mayor que el de mujeres, se explica, al menos en un 75 %, por la prevalenacia, en esa zona, del virus de la hepatitis B o HBV.
Aunque se desconoce exactamente el motivo, las mujeres infectadas por HBV dan a luz más niños que niñas (en una ratio tan alta como 1,55 niños por cada niña) lo que, dada la prevalencia de esa enfermedad en China (más de 120 millones de chinos son protadores del HBV), explicaría el porqué nacen más niños que niñas en ese país y la distinta ratio de hombres y mujeres en la sociedad en su conjunto.

Recientemente, Los Angeles Times ha publicado un artículo que examina la hipótesis de Oster. El artículo también reproduce la opinión de Siri Tellier, representante del Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Población en China, que se muestra escéptico respecto de la correccióna de la tesis de Oster en virtud de que: a) en el Tibet la prevalencia de la hepatitis B es muy alta y sin embargo el índice de nacimientos de niños es el normal y b) en China la ratio de nacimientos de niños por niñas es el normal cuando se trata del primer hijo para incrementarse luego en posteriores alumbramientos lo que no se compadece con la tesis de Oster
